World’s cutest solar farm is in China and is shaped like a panda

The Panda Power Plant in Datong, China, has the shape of the country’s most treasured animal, offering 50 megawatts (MW) of clean energy in the first phase. Panda Green Energy installed the solar farm under an agreement with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to support renewable energy. The first phase was just connected to the grid, according to Inhabitat.

The black parts of the pandas, like the ears and arms, are comprised of monocrystalline silicon solar cells, while the grey and white tummy and face are made of thin film solar cells. Besides offering clean electricity, the panda solar stations are also promoting sustainable development among China’s young people. A youth activity centre at the Panda Power Plant aimed for schoolchildren will detail the advantages of using solar power.

The company estimates that the Panda Power Plants will be able to provide 3.2 billion kilowatt-hours of green power in 25 years, save 1.056 million tons of coal and reduce carbon emissions by 2.74 million tons. In the upcoming five years, more panda plants will be installed as part of the Panda 100 Program in Belt and Road areas. After this, some of the panda plants could be built outside China.
