This farm in a box can pop up anywhere on city streets
Finnish enterprise Exsilio Oy has developed an urban farm in a box called EkoFARMER, which can sprout a flourishing veggie farm on any city block, Inhabitat.com reports.
With urban farming and community gardening growing in popularity and small gardens sprouting on top of skyscrapers, EkoFARMER comes to help with the logistics. The 13-meter farming module can be installed anywhere there is running water and electricity.
EkoFARMER contains ecological soil and can be used for both commercial and scientific purposes. It can also benefit restaurants and institutional kitchens as it can also function as a complementary solution for those that want to expand traditional greenhouses.
“EkoFARMER is an excellent option for business fields in need of salads, herbs, (edible) flowers or medicinal plants, for example. The social aspect of urban farming is also prominent. For this reason, our solution is suitable for associations wanting to earn some extra income, or societies wanting to offer meaningful activities for the unemployed, for example. This is an opportunity to create new micro-enterprises”, said Tapio.
