Does getting a base tan protect you from sunburn? Here is the answer
According to a recent study, getting a base tan does not protect you from sunburn, metro.co.uk reports.
The study published in the journal Photodermatology, Photoimmunology & Photomedicine, concluded that people that go on holidays already being tanned are more likely to get a sunburn than those who go to the beach without a previous tan.
Scientists looked at 163 university students that had gone on sunny holidays and saw that those who had gone already tanned were more likely to return home suffering from sunburn.
”Many people think that a base tan will protect them from both sunburns and skin cancer,” says the study’s co-author John Lowe, head of School of Health and Sports Sciences at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia.
While base tanning does help the skin in producing melanin, which can help filter the sun’s rays, it is not enough to protect against the negative effects of the UV rays.
