Could cheese be the cure for deafness?
Scientists now believe that cheese might be the cure for deafness, and are trying to prove this with the help of the US Army.
The researchers believe that a chemical compound called D-methionine might help humans suffering from deafness, as tests conducted on animals have shown the compound to reverse the damage to nerve cells in the ear.
Around 600 troops in the US Army are now going to undergo a cheese diet so as to test whether the effects will be the same with them, since they have to endure loud blasts that can damage the nerve cells in the inner ear.
“We have documented in animal studies that D-methionine can reduce or prevent noise-induced hearing loss. We now need to determine if it has similar efficacy in humans,” said the doctors leading the US trial.
