What can we do in order to prevent cancer.

According to Cancer Research UK, back in 2014, approximately 163,444 people lost their life’s due to cancer. Cancer Research UK also states that in 2014 there was approximately 356,860 cases of cancer.

Lets put things into perspective. As of 2017, the population of Iceland is 334,303, according to Worldmeters.info. Statistically speaking, that would be half of the population of one country. That is how many people lost their life’s. More than Iceland’s population have had 356,000 cases of cancer. Never underestimate how threatening cancer actually is.

Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by uncontrollable growth and spread of abnormal cells. There are over 100 types of cancer. And any part of the body can be affected.

Childhood cancers account for 1% of all new cancer diagnoses. In 2013, an estimated 11,630 childhood cancer cases have occurred among children 14 years and younger, cancer being the second leading cause of death in children. The most common cancers among men are: prostate, lung and colorectal cancer. For women the most common are breast, lung and colorectal cancer.

These are only a select few of many facts about cancer according to DoSomething.org. The question is can anything be done to help prevent cancer?

MayoClinic.org states these 7 tips could help prevent cancer:

  1. Don’t smoke tobacco.
  2. Eating a healthy diet.
  3. Keeping to a healthy weight and being very physically active.
  4. Protecting yourself from the sun. Be generous with sunscreen.
  5. Get yourself immunized.
  6. Stay away from risky behaviour through safe sex, not sharing needles etc.
  7. Frequent medical check ups.

MayoClinic isn’t saying these tips will prevent cancer altogether, but just reduce the risk of getting cancer. Let’s fight cancer together!
