Being vegan

Veganism is a lifestyle which has become increasingly more accepted in society and more people seem interested in it. ‘The Vegan Society’ website mentions research which claims that, in 2016, there were over half a million vegans living in Britain. It also proceeds to mention how this is over triple the amount estimated in 2006.

What is veganism

Veganism is a lifestyle which aims to limit the harm of animals. This involves not consuming any animal products such as dairy, meat or eggs.

Why do people take on this lifestyle?

Some people take on this lifestyle as veganism is known for being a low-fat diet. Peta.org says how, on average, vegans are up to 20 pounds lighter than meat-eaters. Also, many people incorporate veganism into their lifestyle for ethical reasons. There are many documentaries, such as earthlings, which show graphic footage of animals being mistreated for the purpose of human consumption. Peta.org says how, by being vegan, you can save over 100 animals per year.

Why is veganism increasing?

The Telegraph website says how the number of vegans in Britain has increased by 360% in 10 years.

Social media can have great influence on many people, especially teenagers who seem to have an engaged interest in it. Niomi Smart, for example, is a YouTuber who has a plant based diet. She recently released a recipe book entitled ‘Eat Smart.’ She currently has over 1 million followers on Instagram, all of whom can be potentially influenced by her lifestyle. Niomi is just one among many who has a platform of which can be used to promote healthy eating.

Generally, being vegan is no longer as hard as it used to be. Well known supermarkets often have vegan products available thus meaning there is more accessibility.

Attitudes towards veganism has changed. The rise is veganism suggests that it has become more socially accepted as opposed to what was once seen as a bizzare and restrictive lifestyle.
