Many cancer deaths in China are from risk factors which are modifiable

There are a great number of deaths from cancer in China and many of these are due to modifiable risk factors.

It has been reported by the American Cancer Society that about 50 percent of cancer deaths in men and 33 percent of cancer deaths of women in China in 2013 were attributable to risk factors which were potentially modifiable. These modifiable risk factors include alcohol, smoking, nutrition, physical activity, weight and infections.

The researchers came to the conclusion that public health interventions which are effective to eliminate or decrease exposure from these risk factors can have a significant impact on lowering the burden of cancer in China. This is very significant in view of the fact that the leading cause of death in China is cancer.

A team of researchers which was led by Farhad Islami, M.D., Ph.D. of the American Cancer Society has said these findings support the need for broad implementation of cancer interventions which are already known. New strategies are also needed to lower established and emerging risk factors for cancer. These factors include carcinogenic infections, smoking, excess body weight, drinking alcohol, and physical inactivity.

This study has been published in the Annals of Oncology. There is a high burden of cancer in China. Public health interventions which have a goal of effectively wiping out or lowering exposure to cancer risk factors can have a great impact on lowering the burden of cancer in China
