Help put a stop to the “sea of plastic” in supermarkets

Supermarket aisles are lined with convenience food in plastic trays and drinks in plastic bottles, and we load our trolley without giving it too much thought.

Most of it goes into the recycling bin, making us think we have done our bit for the environment, but in fact, only a small percentage of this plastic waste is actually recycled, with the bulk of it destined for landfill or left to litter our landscape. Much of it ends up in the oceans, causing pollution and endangering sea life.

Now the campaign group A Plastic Planet has launched a drive to cut down on the waste produced by supermarkets, urging major retailers to introduce plastic-free aisles, allowing shoppers to buy products loose, or in paper packaging.

The social media campaign #PlasticAddict invites people to make videos on their phones admitting to being ‘a plastic addict’ but saying they are ready for change. (To add your video go to: [email protected])

Once a target of 2050 videos is reached, these will be shown to CEO’s of major supermarkets. This figure represents the estimated date when the amount of plastic will outweigh fish in the ocean, unless action is taken to prevent this from happening.

Plastic food packaging is now so common that it’s hard to imagine life without it, but before it became popular, food and drink was sold in tin cans, glass bottles and jars, or packaged in tin foil, paper sachets and cardboard cartons, and these options still offer an alternative for consumers.

Campaign co-founder Sian Sutherland is waging war against the “sea of plastic” which confronts shoppers when they go to the supermarket. “We want the choice between buying our food in plastic or not,” she says. “We believe supermarkets and brands will give us this choice if enough of us demand it. That is why we set up A Plastic Planet and that is why we are calling for A Plastic Free Aisle.”
