Parents honour their deceased twins by challenging people to act kindly

A couple in Colorado is challenging people from all over the world to do a dozen acts of kindness, in honour of their identical twin sons who died before their first birthday.

Liz and Chris Kawulok are marking the loss of their wonderful baby boys, Luke and Liam, with love on the anniversary of their deaths, according to CBS. They are asking people to wear blue and post 12 acts of kindness on social media using the hashtag #forLandL, so that they preserve the twins’ memory alive.

The short life of the twins wasn’t an easy one. Doctors discovered, four months into Liz’s pregnancy, a rare disease called Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS), which meant that one twin was getting too much blood, while the others received too little. They flew to Seattle immediately and had emergency surgery within 36 hours.

The procedure was risky, but ultimately saved the babies. However, they were born eight weeks early and received a worrying diagnosis: lissencephaly or “smooth brain”. The twins’ brains were malformed, growing without the usual folds in the cerebral cortex. Their life expectancy was around two years.

“Every time they’d smile or they would coo or make a noise or giggle it was something we didn’t know they would ever do, so it was really kind of a special moment every single time,” Chris said.

Liam died in his parents’ arms at 7 months old, while Luke died four weeks later. On March 6, Liz gave birth to a baby girl, whose name is Zosia Luli — “Lu” for Luke, and “Li” for Liam.
