VIDEO: This nurse had a brilliant idea that saved twins’ lives
Having a newborn baby is a reason of joy for all parents, and if the parents happen to have twins, then the happiness is even more intense. However, the mother and father of Kyrie and Brielle Jackson had their happiness toned down by the fact that their twins arrived 12 weeks premature at Massachusetts Memorial Hospital in Wooster, which led to a whole range of problems that eventually had the most unexpected resolution.
Kyrie and Brielle Jackson were born 12 weeks premature and weighed two pounds each. Kyrie managed to somehow start gaining weight and thus gradually improve her health, but her sister, Brielle, was not that lucky. Three weeks after her birth, Brielle’s oxygen levels were extremely low, as she was placed in the incubator. What was even more concerning was that her heart rate was dropping alarmingly fast, her breathing was labored and her temperature was falling. All signs were pointing towards the fact that Kyrie would make it out of the hospital, but that Brielle would not join her sister.
Gayle Kasparian, a neonatal intensive care unit nurse, had a brilliant idea that would save Brielle’s life and make him enter the hearts of her family forever. Gayle saw that the twins, although they had been together in the womb, were now being held separate. He thought that this might have a significant contribution to the way Brielle’s body was responding to the new environment, so he decided to go for a rather unusual solution: nestling the girls together, placing them side by side in the incubator. This was a new method that had appeared in Europe, and it seemed like the only option left to try and see whether Brielle, who was now blue in the face, would survive.
Kyrie was thus placed in the incubator alongside Brielle and she immediately put her arm around her little sister. What happened next is considered nothing short of a miracle, and the embrace that Kyrie gave to her sister is now called ”the hug that helped change medicine”. This turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to Brielle, as her vital signs instantly stabilized, highlighting the amazing and healing power of touch.
Brielle started a beautiful way towards recovery and started getting stronger once again. The girls are now two healthy and strong adults, who love to tell curious people how their unbreakable bond turned out to be a life-saver.
The twins’ story is therefore nothing short of a miracle. The fact that Kyrie got better may not have the most scientific explanation in the world, but it is definitely something that happened because of the true power of love between the two sisters and the intense prayers that their parents kept saying every single moment while the girls were in their incubators. This serves as a truly inspiring story for everyone involved in this at first heartbreaking, but then heartwarming start of the lives of two beautiful and incredible young women. It is a reminder that miracles do happen, if we fight for them long enough.
