VIDEO: Dying Man Reunites with His Long-Lost Love
Ken Boyer, 60, was fighting terminal cancer when he came across the Facebook profile of one of his former loves, Shelly Kimbrel, whom he’d met 20 years ago. Boyer and Kimbrel had briefly dated back in the days and even though their relationship didn’t last, their love remained. As they reconnected, Boyer mentioned his terminal diagnosis. Kimbrel made the quick decision to uproot her own life and join him down in Florida. Within hours of her arrival in, she became Mrs. Boyer. This is the very definition true love!
The pair met 20 years ago in Missouri where he owned a bar and where she still lives but they lost track of one another and led separate lives, not exchanging a word until Ken, who had relocated to Palm Bay, Florida, popped up on Shelly’s recommended friends list.
Shelly was still living in Missouri when the pair reconnected but Ken had moved to Palm Bay in Florida. They reconnected online through friends who Ken plays softball with.
After exchanging a few brief messages, he told her about his condition and that he was looking after himself.
‘I said, “No, you are not. I’ll take a leave of absence from work.
The pair tied the knot on Saturday at the soft ball fields where he plays in thanks of the friends he plays there with whose distant social media connection to Shelly brought them back in to contact.
Weeping after saying ‘I do’, Ken described their marriage as the best possible end to a ‘really good life’. ‘It’s tough for me to have to accept this, but I have. ‘I’m ready. I’ve had a really good life. God has been good to me and if this is my time, then it’s my time.
‘God could not give me a better present if this is my last hurrah. I could not have asked for anything better.’
The pair plan to move back to Missouri to seek alternative treatment. The groom did not disclose what kind of cancer he is suffering or exactly how much time he has left.
Kimbrel said she asked Boyer who was taking care of him, to which he replied he was taking care of himself.
“I said, ‘No, you are not. I’ll take a leave of absence from work. I’ll talk to them and see what I can do. I will take care of you,'” Kimbrel said. Kimbrel arrived in Florida from Missouri on April 19. Boyer said he proposed to her within an hour of picking her up from the airport. They said they both knew they had feelings for each other decades ago and never told each other. “God could not give me a better present if this is my last hurrah,” Boyer said. “I could not have asked for anything better.”
Determined to fight and to never give up on love, Boyer said he couldn’t have written a more perfect final chapter.
“I fought this a lot because I love each and every one of these people that are here,” Boyer said at his wedding.
Boyer’s friends originally planned for the wedding to take place on a baseball diamond, but because of the rain it was moved indoors.
Boyer and Kimbrel plan to move back to Missouri, where Boyer plans to seek alternative treatment.
