What happens when we die? It is a question all humans ask at some point in their life and is perhaps the greatest mystery we face as humans.
Three years ago, on April 1, 2014, Marie Robinson’s son Jack died of a brain tumor; he was only four years old. Understandably, it has been a long and difficult grieving process for her and the rest of his family — including his twin brother, Liam.
This year, Robinson planned to visit his grave on the anniversary of his death. Alone in the car before walking to the sacred spot, she remembers speaking out loud, saying, “Jack, please show Mummy a sign.”
As she sat on the ground next to the headstone, Robinson was struggling emotionally with the fact it had been three years since she had lost her little boy. Then something miraculous happened: a tiny robin flew down and landed on her.
“[A] little robin kept flying around me trying to land on me, eventually landing on my foot – he didn’t seem scared at all…he flew over and landed on my hand,” she said. “He kept looking at me directly in my face and at one point he landed on my shoulder and nibbled me a couple of times.”
Aside from the name similarity, Robins have a particular significance for the Robinson family — especially the twin boys. “Whenever we’d go out, Jack and [Liam] would go robin spotting so it is something we always associate with him — it was just breathtaking,” she said.
Robinson admits she has noticed an increased interaction with Robins in general since Jack’s death, and even posted about sighting them on Facebook in 2014, several months after her son’s passing. She wrote, “Just at my little Jack’s garden and I turn to one side and on the hedge is a sweet little robin watching me.”
She was able to capture this incredible moment on camera and posted it to Facebook with the caption, “Can’t believe what’s just happened, come to see my precious boy Jack — just sat down on ground next to him and this happened. Yes it brought me to tears. Taking it as a sign from Jack.”
There are various opinions of what seeing a Robin can mean, but most of them are comforting and reassuring. Needless to say, this is how Marie is taking the sign.
No matter how you interpret this event, whether with belief or skepticism, you have to agree that it is curious. It’s little moments like these that spark wonder and awe, pushing us to consider what lies beyond the confines of our human understanding.
