Recently, Ashton Kutcher stopped by the TODAY show to promote his Netflix show The Ranch. During the interview, the two hosts were pleasantly surprised by the actor’s activism when he asked them to get behind his cause. His organization, named Thorn and co-founded with his ex-wife Demi Moore in 2008, aims to end human sex trafficking and child pornography.

During the interview, he revealed that his efforts reached an all-time high recently. He helped save more than 6000 human trafficking victims and put over 2000 abusers behind bars. The one thing all the victims have in common? They were all found by traffickers using the internet.

“We’re building digital tools to fight human trafficking,” Kutcher said during the interview. “Basically, the purchase and commerce for human trafficking is happening online, just like everything else now, and so we’re building digital tools to fight back against it.”

The organization’s strategy for ending human trafficking is to use technology and “drive innovation in the fight against trafficking.” Their website explains that they are partnering with tech industry companies like Facebook, Google, Yahoo and Adobe, as well as government and NGO organizations, to combat the predatory behavior permeating the internet. They hope that through their efforts they can rescue victims and protect vulnerable children.

Kutcher explained that his organization is also working with law enforcement units by giving them the tools they need to find and minimize the predatory behavior on the internet. Disturbing data compiled by Thorn shows that sites like Craigslist are frequently used as a place for carrying the illegal transactions and human trafficking.

Thorn also shows that in 2015, 75% of child sex trafficking survivors were sold online at some point. Some people were posted and sold online multiple times a day and they included pictures, a description and a price of the person being sold. The anti-human trafficking group Polaris also reported that 4.5 million people are being forced to work for sex traffickers.

Ashton’s activism isn’t limited to human trafficking. In his interview with TODAY, he also revealed that his next battle will be to pledge to eliminate child pornography from the internet.
