VIDEO: This surgical assistant comforts a puppy when it wakes up from anaesthesia

A surgery can be a traumatizing event for any human, let alone for an animal that cannot even comprehend what’s going on with it. Dennis Moses, surgical assistant at an animal rescue center, decided to comfort his little patient after it woke up from anesthesia. Moses cradled the dog and comforted it, trying to stop it from getting more frightened and soothe it. This truly was a heart-warming moment

Life can be scary when you’re a puppy growing up in a shelter. It can be even scarier when you’ve just been put under anesthesia by a team of humans with sharp tools.
But there’s someone who won’t let the animals suffer and be scared and this is Moses. Moses is a veterinarian’s assistant for the surgical team at BARCS Animal Shelter, in Baltimore, Maryland, but when the surgery’s done, he takes it upon himself to comfort the dogs.
A video posted to Facebook by BARCS Animal Shelter shows Moses calming a dog named Meesha with kisses and gentle words after she was spayed. As you can see and hear in the video, she needed all the TLC she could get.
“I was whispering to her, just singing,” Moses told thedodo.com
“If you’ve ever had surgery, you wake up, and you’re not sure where you’re at,” said Moses. “It’s a scary thing even for dogs and cats, especially being in the shelter and being that young.”
In the video, Meesha cries out in confusion about her post-anesthetic state. Moses eases her whimpering by holding her close and softly singing to her. When asked what song he chose to sing to Meesha, Moses said, “‘Ten Little Froggies,’ it’s like a little kids’ song I used to sing to my sister.”
Moses didn’t know where Meesha came from. There are so many dogs who come through the operating room each day that he doesn’t always know their backstory. He focuses on making sure the dogs’ surgeries are done safely and that each dog is comfortable. As you can see in the video above, he does an excellent job.
As a 12-to-16-week-old puppy, Meesha was likely found as a stray or surrendered to the shelter by a previous owner, said Moses. But that’s all behind her now, because Meesha was picked up on Thursday afternoon and brought to her forever home
Though Meesha has already found her home, there are plenty of other dogs who desperately need the same kind of love Moses gives to the animals who come through BARCS.
People should only become vets if they truly care about the animals. The main difference between doctors and vets is that humans understand why they need to get shots or surgery and can decide if they want it or not, whereas animals don’t understand why you are hurting them and think that they’ve done something wrong to deserve it.
This is why it’s important that being a veterinarian isn’t just another job for you, but actually your calling so that the animals can understand you better and be comfortable in your presence.
