VIDEO: Friendship Between Man and Snake

Have you ever heard of a friendship between a man and a snake? You most likely have not. In this video, a large snake comes up from out of the water, peers at the old man sitting on the dock, then takes a snack right out of his hand. He claims that the snake “remembers him,” which suggests he’s been doing this for a while. Tim Jones, a retired zoo director living in Texas, does indeed know what he’s doing. According to him, three large Nerodia rhombifers (diamondback water snakes) live behind his house in the lake. He’s gotten quite familiar with the large female over the years and has trained her to gingerly take fish from his hand. How awesome is that?!

So does this mean that snakes can be tamed and trained?

Most snakes can, given lots of patience and working with them in the proper way. Some individuals, however, will never be trustworthy – high strung, defensive or simply adamantly wanting to be left alone, they will always be prone to bite. Most individuals, though, will tame reasonably well. Some species are naturally more docile and easier to tame than others. In terms of actual domestication, it’s likely that captive-bred corn snakes have really achieved this.

According to animals.mom.me, snakes are not as easy to train as other animal, but it is possible.

While snakes are rewarding pets, they lack the intelligence of mammals or birds, and will never come when they are called or fetch your slippers. Snakes experience the world so differently from humans that biologists are not even sure how to study their intelligence. Nevertheless, you can change your snake’s behavior in several ways, effectively “teaching” him how to act or react to various stimuli.

Maybe it’s just me, but this video of a huge snake’s unusual friendship with a man is kind of the coolest thing ever. In the video below, a large water snake comes up from out of the water, peers at the old man sitting on the dock, then takes a snack right out of his hand. He claims that the snake “remembers him,” which suggests he’s been doing this for a while, adding to the awesomeness this moment.

It turns out that Tim Jones, a retired zoo director living in Texas, does know what he’s doing. According to Jones, three large Nerodia rhombifers, commonly known as diamondback water snakes, live behind his house in the lake. He’s gotten quite familiar with the large female over the years and has trained her to gingerly take fish that he catches from his hand.

“Not only did she remember me, she really came up to me when she saw me. I’m real happy over that,” Jones says.

The best part of the video, was the man telling everyone why he “taped up his britches”.

This video may be slightly creepy, but Jones’ commentary makes it one of the most endearing clips of all time.
