The oldest tigress in the world has passed away and a lot of people gathered to say goodbye.
According to heroviral.com, Machli was known as the “lady of the lake.” Machli, which means fish, got her name because she had a fish-like mark on one of her cheeks. She was one of the world’s oldest tigers and lived in India’s Ranthambore National Park. At approximately 20 years of age, Machli had died.
A wild tiger can usually live for up to 15 years. Machli’s health had been declining over the past several weeks. Most of her teeth were gone, and she had the use of only one eye. A video posted on August 16th, showed Machli laying on the ground struggling to get up. On Thursday, she passed away.
Machli was a famous tiger in India, she represented strength and grace. In 2008, she was caught on film wrestling and killing a 14-foot crocodile.
Machli, at 17 years of age, was featured on a commemorative stamp and was given a lifetime achievement award for her contributions to conservation and to the Indian economy. Machli reportedly was a multi-million dollar earner!
Machli had raised 11 cubs. Some believe that 60 percent of the tigers in Ranthambore Park can trace their lineage to her. The state of Rajasthan chief minister, Vasundhara Raje, wrote on Twitter that Machli’s bloodline reigns supreme in the glades and valleys.
There are less that 4,000 tigers left in living in the wild. Approximately another 5,000 live in zoos. Machel’s death is a significant loss to the wild tiger population.
After her death, people all around the world wept. Ranthambore shared pictures of the tigress’ body covered in flowers.
