This is the Highest Outdoor Whiskey Bar in the World and It’s Stunning

Most hotels think that it’s more than enough to be the first hotel to have their own custom blend of Chivas, but the CEO of lebua Hotels & Resorts, Deepak Ohri, thought that this was far from enough.

He thought that if they had a unique blend of whiskey then they needed a truly unique place to sell it in.

This led to the world’s highest outdoor whiskey bar coming to life. It’s called Alfresco 64 – A Chivas Bar; and it is on the 64th story of the Tower Club at lebua in Bangkok.

According to forbes.com, aside from the height and the sweeping city view, Ohri wanted to make sure his whiskey bar stood out in other ways.

“I wanted to go away from the traditional dark leather sofas, wood paneling and dim light.

We created something beautiful and festive. It’s half indoors and half outdoors, and designed to resemble the cabin and prow of a luxury yacht.”

There’s also an indoor VIP Heritage room, complete with the “captain’s seat” — everyone is welcome, but entrance requires the purchase of a bottle.

“It’s the only place you can steer a yacht while enjoying your drinks,” says Ohri.

The whiskey that inspired the project — Chivas Regal Exclusive “lebua Blend” —was created by Chivas Regal Master Blender Colin Scott.

The blend contains whiskeys distilled in 1985 and earlier, then finished in a first fill sherry cask. Only 96 bottles are available, exclusively at the Alfresco 64, and go for $7K each.

“Thailand is a great market for whisky,” says Ohri, “but consumption is towards the lower-end brands. We’re introducing the luxury market and giving them a fashion statement.”

He estimates that 70% of customers coming in are locals.

Alfresco 64 joins an already prestigious collection of indoor/outdoor drinking and dining spots at lebua, including their Sirocco Restaurant and Sky Bar — the hotel will be familiar to movie fans for its appearance in The Hangover Part II, where a helicopter hovers above its rooftop dining guests in the film’s climax.

It’s also not the first single-beverage bar project for lebua. Two years ago they opened Champagne at the Flute Bar in collaboration with Perrier-Jouët, and it was an immediate success.

“It took us six days to break even,” says Ohri, “and when we were creating our Chivas blend, I thought why not do the same thing with whiskey.”

The Tower Club at lebua encompasses 221 suites on the 51st and above floors of the hotel — the lower floors make up the lebua at State Tower — and feature wide views of the Chao Phraya river.

Those who loved the film can rent out The Tower Club Hangover Suite, with 3 bedrooms and four balconies, where cast members stayed during the production — it also entitles you to a free Hangovertini at the Sky Bar.

In addition to Bangkok, lebua operates three resorts in India and the Lake Okareka Lodge in Rotorua, New Zealand.
