According to heroviral.com, flooding creates all kinds of dangerous situations. It can destroy buildings and belongs. It can endanger people. And, it can put animals into life threatening situations. Recently a particular region of New Zealand was blanketed with seemingly endless amounts of rain.

Flood waters filled the streets, and after they subsided, something horrible was discovered. Rescuers at the Massey University Veterinarian Emergency Response Team, Horowhenua Rural Fire Force and Palmerston North’s Urban Search and Rescue hurried to the scene of an animal in a drastic situation.

An eight year old horse had become lodged in a drainage ditch. The create was trapped nearly seven feet below the ground and was absolutely covered in mud.

The ditch that had ensnared the horse was not very wide, and afforded little room for breathing.

The horse was understandably panicking, but its struggle to get free from the ditch only increased the chance that it would get injured.

Rescuers tried to keep the horse calm while they went at their work. The team used a tarp to cover the horse’s head so rocks wouldn’t hurt him as they tried to dig him out.

They also used something called a “position wedge” to keep his head above the layer of mud around him.

The rescuers had outside help from local fire and animal rescue agencies, and the horse’s hopes of survival were rising.

The all had to be careful not to collapse the ditch onto the horse, who had to be sedated so his thrashing wouldn’t cause an avalanche of dirt.

After five hours of digging, the horse was safely pulled from the ditch!
