Baby Orangutan Kept Chained to a Shelf for 6 Months

A baby orangutan was found chained to someone’s kitchen shelf.

When will we understand that animals are not ours to play with and torture?!

They are not our to lock up or starve!

They are not here for our entertainment and they are not ours to abandon!

According to heroviral.com, it has been six months, and this baby orangutan has lived on this shelf the entire time. Bonika is only 18 months old. She should have been with her mother instead of being kept as a pet in Borneo. Bonika would be released for just a few hours each day to play with the man’s child.

The rest of the time, she was chained to the kitchen wall. According to International Animal Rescue, the chain around her neck was so tight she was uncomfortable.

The chain was too short, and Bonika could only move side to side.

She was stranded on the plank. Bonika was malnourished.

She was being fed human foods – a dangerous diet of biscuits, rice, sugar cane, bread, and baby milk.

During a visit, IAR found out about Bonika and rushed in to help her.

Bonika’s owner said that they found her while walking to work, she was thin, and they had rescued her brought her home.

However, IAR believes that Bonika’s mother was probably killed because no mother orangutan will willingly be separated from her baby.

IAR wrote an update and said that Bonika is now in good hands and will not be chained up anymore.

Bonika will spend some time in quarantine but will be introduced to the other apes at IAR’s orphanage for orangutans.

In July, orangutans were classified as critically endangered due to the palm oil industry and the illegal pet trade.

At least Bonika now has a chance to grow and thrive.
