A woman whose life ambition was to be the fattest lady in the world has revealed how falling pregnant gave her a huge ‘wake up’ call about her weight.
Morbidly obese Monica Riley, from Fort Worth, Texas, would devour 10,000 calories a day in an attempt to become ‘immobile’ and ‘bedbound’.
By the age of 28, Riley weighed in at 700lbs and was fed constantly by her ‘feeder’ fiancé, Sid – but has since lost a staggering 201lbs in just ten weeks after falling pregnant for a third time.
After suffering two miscarriages, Riley – who is now pregnant again – is overhauling her lifestyle so she can reach full term and be an active mother to her child.
Riley says: ‘At one point in my life, I wanted to be the biggest woman in the world. But now that I am pregnant, it’s been a wake up call.’
She says she’s now 15 weeks pregnant and on a mission to fight the flab, having already lost 201lbs in just ten weeks, taking her down to 499lbs.
‘I want to be able to be active with my child. I want to be able to get up and with him or her and be involved in every way. You can’t do that if you’re immobile,’ she said.
She found out she was pregnant for the first time last summer. The news came as a surprise but the couple was overjoyed at the prospect of becoming parents.
However, Riley was at her heaviest weight of 700lbs and continued to indulge in her extreme diet, unaware of the potential harm this could cause to the baby.
A typical day’s food during that period might include six scones, six sausages in a bread roll, sugary cereal, two weight gain shakes, four McChicken sandwiches, four double cheeseburgers, a large French fries, 30 chicken nuggets, macaroni cheese, Taco bell and a gallon of ice cream.
A matter of weeks after finding out their good news their hopes were shattered when a 12 week scan showed that the fetus had deformities and wouldn’t survive.
Riley and Sid continued to try for a baby and a few months later Monica found out she was pregnant for the second time, but tragically she began bleeding heavily on Christmas Eve at 14 weeks and suffered another miscarriage.
Riley says she blames herself for the miscarriages, and after finding out she had developed type two diabetes due to her size, she and Sid decided to put their plans to start a family on hold.
With doctors’ advice, and Sid’s help, Riley says she has enough motivation to keep going.
She’s eating healthy salads and steamed veg with chicken breast, and is undertaking daily walks to boost her weight loss. But it hasn’t been an easy transition.
