UPS drivers have entered the busy Christmas season with customers receiving and returning numerous packages to prepare for the holidays. One UPS driver entered the work day focused on his route, but ended the day a hero because of one lifesaving observation.
His heroic work began when he walked up to a home in Robertsville, Missouri to pick up a package. This scheduled stop appeared to be completely ordinary until he noticed two words scribbled on the package being returned.
A woman answered the door and handed the driver the package. Little did he know at the time that the woman’s husband was just behind the door, holding a gun to her to make sure she complied.
James Tyler Jordan, 33 years old, thought that he was in complete control when he made his wife act normally in front of the UPS driver. Thankfully, she had a clever plan.
She somehow managed to quickly scrawl the phrase “call 911” on the package before handing it over to the driver. If the driver had not been paying attention to the writing on the package, he could have easily missed the desperate cry for help.
The driver called the police, and a SWAT team was directed to the home. Jordan was arrested and taken into custody.
Jordan’s wife told the chilling details of being held hostage along with their 3-year-old child for approximately 15 hours. The young child was locked in a bedroom without food or water during this time.
The woman explained how she was not allowed to use a phone or leave their home. She attempted to run away, but Jordan dragged her by her hair back to the house.
The isolation was only the beginning of the terrifying ordeal. He also physically and sexually assaulted her.
Much of the 15-hour period was spent with a gun to her head where her life was continuously threatened. The UPS driver seemed to be her only chance at human contact.
Fortunately, the driver stepped in and did exactly what he needed to do to end the terrible hostage situation. UPS came out with statement expressing their pride over the UPS driver’s heroic observation and courage.
The company stated, “We are grateful this UPS driver with more than a decade of service followed protocol when he saw a customer in distress and contacted authorities after he saw her message to contact 9-1-1.”
Jordan is being charged with domestic assault, sodomy, felonious restraint, unlawful use of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child.
