Faye Dunaway finally speaks up about the Oscars: “I feel very guilty”
The highlight of this year’s Oscars remains the infamous announcement that “La La Land” won Best Picture when in fact “Moonlight” was the winner. Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were in the middle of the controversy, considering they were the two actors who announced the faulty winner.
The accounting firm PwC was truly at fault, not the “Bonnie and Clyde” duo, as the Independent reports.
In an interview with NBC News, Dunaway said she is feeling quilty, not angry, explaining the events from her perspective.
“He [Beatty] took the card out and he didn’t say anything,” she said. “He paused, he looked over me, offstage, he looked around and I finally said, ‘You’re impossible!’
“And I thought he was joking, I thought he was stalling. Warren’s like that, he kind of holds the power – a dramatic pause! It’s part of his charm.”
She said that they were both shocked: “I won’t say deers in the headlight, but you are completely stunned, you don’t know what has happened.
Elaborating on her feelings, the former-Oscar winner added: “I wasn’t angry. I feel very guilty. I thought I could have done something, surely. Why didn’t I see Emma Stone’s name on top of the card?”
Beatty Warren also spoke about the incident on Graham Norton’s show, saying that it wasn’t Dunaway’s fault.
The accounting firm PwC – who have overseen the awards since 1934 – were found guilty. The Academy announced that they will continue working with the firm, but will confiscate handlers’ phones from now on.
Furthermore, there will be rehearsals, new envelope handlers, a third balloting leader privy to the results who qill sit in the control room at the Oscars and report any mistakes, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
