9/11 victim identified almost 16 years later
Another victim of the 11 September 2001 attack on the World Trade Center in New York City has been identified on Monday, almost 16 years later, as the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office announced.
The male victim is the 1,641st person to be identified out of the 2,753 people dead in the attack, according to BBC. His identity was determined using new DNA technology and is being withheld at the request of his family.
At his family’s request, his name was not made public.
The identity of the man was determined by New York City’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, which had been retesting DNA recovered from the accident. Nearly 40% of the people who died that day remain unidentified.
The last time a victim was identified was March 2015, as Fox News reports. His name was Matthew Yarnell and he was working at Fiduciary Trust Company International at the time the Twin Towers collapsed.
Since 2001, around 22,000 human samples recovered from Ground Zero had been tested and retested since 2001, in a bid to return their remains to their respective families. However, 100 victims did not have living relatives or family members who participated in the identification process.
