Battle for Mosul and the destruction of Al-nuri mosque
Iraqi prime minister Haider Al Abadi was in Mosul to celebrate victory over ISIS. The famous Al-nuri mosque was destroyed during the battle for Mosul.
Iraqi forces say ISIS blew up the great al-Nuri mosque located in the old city of Mosul , Al-Nuri mosque was built in 12th century it was almost 800 years old and was famous for leaning minaret.
On the other hand ISIL said that the mosque was hit by US led coalition air strikes the claim is denied by America and Iraqi forces.
This was the mosque where in July 2014 IS leader Abu Bakr Al-bughdadi declared himself as the leader of the “Caliphate”.
The offensive to recapture Mosul began in October last year , Iraqi forces took eastern part of Mosul just in three months of the offensive and opened a new front for the Recapturing of western Mosul in February this year . the battle for western part of the city was more challenging due to its narrow streets and a large number of civilian population.
The campaign to retake Mosul was launched in October 2016 , Iraqi forces took control of eastern side in January and launched the battle for the western part of the city next month , but when the Iraqi forces entered the densely populated Old city the fight grew tougher.
PM Abadi said in a twitter post last month that ” we are seeing the end of the fake ISIS state.”
