Life for what are often called untouchables in India is generally filled with despair. Now a man from the lowest Hindu class system has been elected as President of India.

It has been reported by Tibet Sun that the new President of India is from the lowest Hindu caste system. This is only the second time since India gained independence that a member of the marginalized Dalit community has been choen as a head of state.

With greater than 65 percent of the vote by India’s parliament and state assemblies Ram Nath Kovind won the primarily ceremonial position of President. Kovind is a former lawyer and state governor from the poor Dalit community. He was nominated for the post of President by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling party.

Modi congratulated Kovind on being elected as the President of India on Twitter. Kovind said his victory was an “emotional moment” for him. He said he will be representing those people in India who are employed as daily wage earners and farmers who often sweat for their next meal. The Dalit are very poor and struggle with marginalized lives in India.

The Tibet Post has reported that His Holiness the Dalai Lama congratulated India’s President-elect. The Dalai Lama also extended his thanks for the kindness and generosity of the Government and the people of India. The Dalai Lama says he sees himself as being a son of India.
