The hyperloop has its first successful test
The hyperloop concept – a rail system that can reach extremely high speeds in a vacuum – has been a dream until now.
Elon Musk first introduced the concept in 2012, linking its immunity to weather, speed and low power consumption, according to the Independent. The speed of such a train might reach 760mph, thus reducing a 6 hour journey by car to 35 minutes – which is quicker than a flight, that would take 1 hour and 20 minutes.
One of the startups working on this transportation system shared footage of their first full-scale test in a vacuum. The test was performed in a track built outside Las Vegas. The test vehicle managed to reach 70 mph using magnetic levitation, pulling 2 Gs of acceleration.

“By achieving full vacuum, we essentially invented our own sky in a tube, as if you’re flying at 200,000 feet in the air,” Hyperloop One co-founder Shervin Pishevar said. “For the first time in over 100 years, a new mode of transportation has been introduced.”
