There were 48 people, mainly from the eastern state of Saxony, on the bus and they were aged between 41 and 81, police said.

Speaking at the scene of the crash, Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt said two people were in a critical condition, he said.

“The heat’s development must have been intense because there is nothing flammable left on the bus. Only steel parts are recognisable so you can understand what that meant for the people in this bus,” he said.

UPDATE: Many people were killed when a coach burst into flames after colliding with a lorry on a motorway in the German state of Bavaria on Monday, the German government said.

“Unfortunately numerous people – a tour group from (the eastern German state of) Saxony – lost their lives in this burning bus,” government spokesman Steffen Seibert told a news conference.

Frankenpost did not identify its source for the information and police were not immediately available to comment when contacted by Reuters. A police spokesman told broadcaster n-tv that 17 people were unaccounted for and he expected several had died.

Thirty-one people were injured, some seriously, police said on Twitter. They said there were 48 people on the bus at the time of the crash.
