A young filmmaker has pulled out all the stops to propose to his high school sweetheart, making a music video clip with the help of his future father-in-law and playing it on the big screen in a packed cinema.
Musician Liam Cooper, from Wollongong, south of Sydney, wanted to do something special for his girlfriend of seven years, Amy Smith, by asking her to marry him in front of family, friends and unsuspecting movie goers.
The pair took to their seats at the Greater Union Cinemas in Shellharbour for what Miss Smith, 23, thought was a casual double date with her sister and brother-in-law.
Before the screening of the American comedy-drama film ‘Focus’, the 23-year-old made a dash for the doors, saying he needed to use the bathroom.
As the auditorium filled up with about 100 people, including the couple’s friends, families and unsuspecting ticket-paying punters, they watched as Mr Cooper lip-synced and acted out the storyline to the song Rude by US band Magic.
In the clip, Mr Cooper is seen peddling on his bike as he nervously raced to his girlfriend’s family home in an attempt to ask her father for his daughter’s hand in marriage.
But his future father-in-law, who agreed to ‘star’ in the elaborate project, refuses to give his blessing.
During the making of the proposal, the clip shows Miss Smith several times at the cinema where she is laughing hysterically and looking surprised as she wipes away her tears.
