VIDEO: 10 Amusement Park Rides Too Dangerous for the U.S.

Theme parks are usually a lot of fun!

Everybody loves the carousels, the haunted houses and the Ferris wheels.

The problem is that some rides are actually quite dangerous, or at least not as safe as they should be.

This video presents ten amusement park rides that are too dangerous for the U.S.

Also, here is some further information on a couple of those rides, provided by Wikipedia.

Colossus is a roller coaster at Thorpe Park in Surrey, England, and the park’s first major attraction. It was built by Swiss manufacturers Intamin and designed by Werner Stengel as an adaptation of Monte Makaya in Brazil, with consultation from Tussauds attraction developer John Wardley.

Colossus was the world’s first roller coaster with ten inversions; an exact replica, called the 10 Inversion Roller Coaster, was later built at Chimelong Paradise in Guangzhou, China. It retained its title of having the most inversions on any other roller coaster in the world until The Smiler at Alton Towers took the record in 2013.

Manufacturers Intamin used a similar train style to their Hyper Coaster models which are exposed by removing the sides of the train. This caused problems as riders could lift their legs outside of the train whilst it was in motion.

For a brief period in 2002 and 2003 the ride was equipped with metal bars on the sides of the train to prevent this. During 2003 the trains were fitted with new style restraints to prevent riders from doing this and the metal plates were removed.

The roller coaster is located in the Lost City area, in the south-east of the park. The ride is formed of a vertical loop, a cobra roll, two corkscrews and five heartline rolls. The ride’s rough theme is the ruins of a recently unearthed Atlantean civilisation.

The music for the ride and surrounding area was composed by Ian Habgood. During planning and construction Colossus was known as Project Odyssey; both names allude to Ancient Greece, albeit in different ways.

Formula Rossa is a launched roller coaster located at Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Manufactured by Intamin, Formula Rossa is the world’s fastest roller coaster with a top speed of 240 km/h (150 mph).

The coaster train accelerates to its top speed in approximately 5 seconds using a hydraulic launch system which generates a release velocity similar to that of steam catapults on an aircraft carrier. The initial acceleration from standstill reaches 100 kilometres per hour (62 mph) in 2 seconds, beating the best commercially available supercar (as of 2014).

Riders experience up to 1.7 g of force during acceleration and up to 4.8 g throughout the ride. The roller coaster track is 2.2 km (1.4 mi) in length, ranking it 6th in the world for steel roller coasters. Its shape was inspired by the legendary Italian racetrack Autodromo Nazionale Monza.

Due to the high air speeds and thus risk of an impact with airborne particulates or insects, all riders are required to wear protective glasses similar to those used during skydiving. Formula Rossa surpassed Kingda Ka at Six Flags Great Adventure as the world’s fastest roller coaster with Kingda Ka retaining the record of the tallest roller coaster in the world.
