Tensions flare in Kabul at site of bombing

Since the blast on Wednesday, that killed 90 people and saw over 400 injured, tensions have resulted in conflict at the blast site in Kabul. Reports have indicated that security forces have been brought in to suppress protests near the presidential palace.

This has led to local security forces opening fire and shooting into the air. Some local news reports have advised that at least 7 people have been killed as a result of the protests. Other reports advise that tear gas, batons and water cannons have been used to disperse the crowd.

Aljazeera has reported that the clashes are a result of the high number of fatalities in 2016 and 2017, seeing over 4000 deaths in Afghanistan thus far. Calls for the deposition of the Afghan government and the current President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani are gaining momentum since Wednesday’s blast – as many families lost loved ones as a result.

It is expected that due to public pressure the Afghan President may execute Taliban prisoners to quell the unrest. However, as yet no specific faction has accepted responsibility for Wednesday’s atrocity.
