VIDEO: His Truck Rolls and Leaves Him Paralyzed. But When He Opens His Eyes…
Cole Thomas was involved in a horrifying car accident after he swerved to avoid a deer. His seat belt went off and he realized he couldn’t feel his legs. The doctors told him that he had shattered his L2 vertebra. In this video below you will see Cole lying in hospital bed, begging for help.
Lying in his hospital bed, he posted a plea online begging for help locating resources that would help him walk again. It wasn’t long before a family member told him about the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in Chicago.
About a week after his accident, Thomas started physical therapy. He worked with grim determination, despite lacking any sensation below the waist.
The work was hard, and he fought against self-pity. “You get terribly into this pity pit,” he said. “And it’s so easy to fall into that too because it’s really, really hard to see any of the positives throughout any of it.”
After a month of therapy without progress, Thomas decided to pray. He repeated the prayer over and over, and when he opened his eyes, his big toe was moving.
The sight of his toe moving was exactly what Thomas needed to continue his fight. By the end of November, he was moving the other big toe.
He stood unaided for the first time by the end of December. A week later, he practiced walking, holding onto a walker for support, braces stabilizing his legs.
Today, through sheer determination and the drive to achieve, Thomas defied the odds. Seven months after the accident that paralyzed him, Thomas walked out of his rehab facility, holding not a walker or cane, just the hands of his daughters.
Now, he has plans to become a physical therapist. “It’s a whole new start,” he said.
Joshua should know soon when he will leave the Mpls VA, in about a month, and head back to Fargo, for a new chapter in his life, adjusting to life at home again.
Joshua, a former diesel truck mechanic, now has his sights set on being an evangelist. A man of deep faith, he says it’s that, which has brought him through the storm.
“I don’t know how people can survive something like this without it,” said Joshua Cole. “God has a bigger plan for the both of us and I survive on that everyday.
The big changes come in the form of small steps. Being able to swallow, talk, and now, sights set on coughing independently. “We celebrate every baby step that comes by, that he overcomes,” said Beth Cole.
You would think Joshua would be bitter and angry that life has taken the turn. Actually, the opposite.
Driven, a man who is set on persevering and getting better, and hopes of sharing his story with others who feel they’ve lost it all. “To know there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and keep your head up,” said Joshua Cole. Joshua’s home will need a remodel, and there is hope of getting a special van to get him to appointments. Donations can just be made to any US Bank under the name of Donation account of Josh Cole.
Cole Thomas proves that miracles do happen everyday. The power of prayer, together with hard work and determination, can overcome the most insurmountable of obstacles, says wday.com
