Around 100 firefighters are battling a blaze in Covent Garden. A large part of London’s West End has been cordoned off, Evening Standard reports. 12 fire engines were sent to the scene in Long Acre, at about 1pm on Saturday, the London Fire Brigade said.

Crowds of people have gathered near the scene and witnesses reported seeing smoke “everywhere”.

“Part of a mansard roof is alight in a building which consists of a shop and five floors of dwellings above it. The Brigade was called at 12.56pm and is still at the scene. Crews from Lambeth, Euston, Soho, Dowgate, Shoreditch, Whitechapel and Chelsea and surrounding fire stations are at the scene”, he said.

“The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.”
