The touching moment was captured on camera after a bride-to-be asked her future sister-in-law with a brain injury to be her bridesmaid.
There wasn’t a dry eye in the room after Nichole Sullivan, from Drummonds, Tennessee handed her fiancé’s mother a card to read out to her daughter. After embracing her future daughter-in-law, Lenore fought back tears as she read the card’s message to her daughter which said: ‘Soon you will be my sister, but until then will you be my bridesmaid?’
Lenore’s daughter Jessica, 28, was injured in a serious car crash in 2011 when she was thrown through the window on her way home from a first date. It occurred just a day after she had acted as maid of honor for her best friend’s wedding in Florida. She now lives at home with her parents, where she requires round-the-clock care, and was initially left in a ‘minimally conscious’ state. However, in recent years she’s made progress, including smiling, laughing, following people with her eyes and watching TV. Jessica’s brother, Derrick, says of the accident: ‘I’ve seen my mother shed so many sad tears due to Jessie’s accident, and it was great to see some happy tears. Her being overwhelmed with emotions was priceless and a beautiful thing.’
On the night, Jessica hadn’t been wearing a seat belt when a burst tyre caused her car to roll three times. Despite suffering instant brain damage, Jessica’s communication and expression have improved so much that she can now be a part of Nichole and Derrick’s wedding day. The couple, who have been together for two years, wanted to make sure Jessica had a part to play. Derrick and his sister have always been close and Nichole was determined not to leave her out of the celebrations.
Derrick said of the bridesmaid proposal: ‘This was a dream come true for my mother and it meant the world to her.’
Jessica’s family run a Facebook page for their daughter which documents her journey and is followed by nearly 2,000 people.
