April the giraffe has given birth to a baby boy giraffe after months of waiting.
Zookeepers at Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, New York, sent out the alert that the 15-year-old giraffe was about to give birth on Saturday morning.
The animal’s due date was in mid-February, and has been a viral sensation ever since.
More than 1.2million people tuned in to the livestream at some point over the last three months.
A zookeeper described the birth as a ‘perfect delivery’ and announced the gender of the baby after April and the calf had spent more time together.
Two hooves were seen sticking out of the pregnant animal’s backside at 8am, as officials said this was a sign that birth was imminent.
Slightly before 10am, the calf’s face appeared and within moments the baby was born.
Thirty minutes later April began helping her calf take its first steps on its wobbly legs.
At least 1.2 million people tuned into the zoo’s Facebook Live and YouTube stream, eagerly anticipating the live birth.
The baby’s hooves were seen dangling much lower as the birth progressed as of 9.30am on the YouTube livestream.
Right before 10am, the head popped out and within minutes the baby fell to the floor as it was born.
After it plopped to the ground, April turned around and began nuzzling her fourth baby.
The unnamed calf has begun slowly sitting up and stretching its long neck, as it should be standing and walking within an hour.
Baby giraffes are reported to weigh around 150lbs and stand 6-feet-tall at birth, according to Animal Planet.
April became a worldwide sensation in early March when YouTube briefly pulled the 24-hour livestream which had begun on February 10, for ‘nudity and sexual content’, leaving millions of viewers outraged.
The live footage was later restored on February 24 and has since drawn in more than 15 million views from across the world.
Viewers across the world tuned in to witness the anticipated birth, with Facebook users chiming in with their comments.
One person wrote: ‘This is awesome! My seven-year-old has been on this journey of watching April and we are both so excited. Thanks Animal Adventure Park for this wonderful opportunity!’
Another said: ‘Just about to go out for my birthday lunch, just cancelled it, some things are more important, lol, and told no one to ring me up till then.’
One user said: ‘What a beautiful beginning to this Easter Saturday morning! Thank you AAP!’
The zoo hasn’t announced a name for the latest addition to the family, but plans to hold an online naming competition for the baby after it’s born.
