London tube attack: At least 19 passengers injured. One suspect identified – UPDATE

A blast on a London underground train left some passengers injured. Police and the London Fire Brigade confirmed an incident and are at the scene. One eye witness said a ‘fireball flew down carriage.’

UPDATE 32: U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday told British Prime Minster Theresa May the United States would continue to help the United Kingdom thwart attacks, the White House said in a statement after a blast on a London commuter train earlier in the day.

In a telephone call with May, Trump expressed support for those injured and “pledged to continue close collaboration with the United Kingdom to stop attacks worldwide targeting innocent civilians and to combat extremism,” the White House said

UPDATE 30: British security services have identified a suspect involved in the bombing of a busy commuter train in west London with the help of surveillance footage, Sky News reported, citing security sources.

“Security sources say they’ve identified a suspect involved in the Parsons Green bombing, with the aid of CCTV footage,” Mark White, a home affairs correspondent for Sky News, said on Twitter.

UPDATE 29: British Prime Minister Theresa May said on Friday it was not helpful for people to speculate on any investigation after U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted that the culprits behind a bombing on a train were in the sights of the police.

Asked about Trumps’ tweet saying that those responsible for the bomb in west London which injured 22 people were “in the sights of Scotland Yard, May said: “I never think it’s helpful for anybody to speculate on what is an ongoing investigation.”

She also said that the police and security services were doing all they could to identify those responsible for the “cowardly attack”.

UPDATE 28: 19 people have been taken to the hospital, according to the London Ambulance Services. Most of them are being treated for minor injuries.

UPDATE 27: London’s transport authority said on Twitter that there was no service on part of a metro line in west London due to an incident.

“There is no service High Street Kensington – Edgware Road while the police respond to an incident,” according to a message posted on the official Twitter feed of London’s District line.

UPDATE 26: Police was on site at King’s Cross station after a report of a suspicious vehicle. Officers have checked it out and deemed it safe, police announced.

UPDATE 25: According to Sky News, the IED had a timer attached. The information has not been confirmed by law enforcement.

UPDATE 24: Met confirms that the explosion was caused by an improvised device which is being forensically examined.

UPDATE 23: The Metropolitan Police released this statement following the incident saying that detectives from the Met Police’s Counter Terrorism Command are carrying out an urgent investigation into an incident on a London tube train this morning. No arrests have been made so far.

UPDATE 20: Trump says ‘loser terrorist’ behind London tube attack

U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday tweeted about the London tube terrorist attack, saying a ‘loser terrorist’ was behind it. Trump added that such persons must be dealt with ‘in a much tougher manner.’

“Another attack in London by a loser terrorist. These are sick and demented people who were in the sights of Scotland Yard. Must be proactive! Loser terrorists must be dealt with in a much tougher manner. The internet is their main recruitment tool which we must cut off & use better!” Trump tweeted.

UPDATE 19: Metropolitan Police’s AC Mark Rowley said the incident was a ‘detonation of an improvised explosive device.’

“There are many urgent inquiries ongoing, with hundreds of detectives involved, looking at CCTV, forensic work and speaking to witnesses,” Rowley said.

Rowley added the investigation is supported by the MI5.

UPDATE 18: Over 250 people were evacuated from the train after the explosion.

“The Brigade was called at 0821 and firefighters were on the scene within three minutes. Fire crews assisted the London Ambulance Service in treating casualties on the affected train. Firefighters also helped evacuate 253 people from a train not involved in the incident. We continue to support the Metropolitan Police and other services at Parsons Green,” London Fire Brigade Director of Operations Tom George said.

UPDATE 15: Mayor Sadiq Khan released a statement following the Parsons Green incident.

“Our city utterly condemns the hideous individuals who attempt to use terror to harm us and destroy our way of life. As London has proven again and again, we will never be intimidated or defeated by terrorism. I am in close contact with the Metropolitan Police, Transport for London, Government and other emergency services who are responding at the scene and leading the investigation. I will be attending the emergency COBRA meeting in Whitehall this afternoon with the Prime Minister. My sincere gratitude goes to all our courageous emergency responders and the TfL staff who were first on the scene. I urge all Londoners to remain calm and vigilant, and to check TfL’s website for travel advice,” the Mayor of London said on his social media pages.

UPDATE 13: Police have confirmed the blast as a terrorist incident

“Too early to confirm cause of fire – now subject to the investigation that is underway. Station remains cordoned off,” Metropolitan Police added.

British Prime Minister Theresa May is being regularly briefed after armed police rushed to an incident at a London underground station on Friday, with local media reporting there had been an explosion on a packed rush-hour commuter train.

“The prime minister is receiving regular updates,” a spokesman from May’s office said when asked if May was aware of the incident.

UPDATE 10: The British Transport Police asked people to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious behaviour.

UPDATE 9: The Sun reports 20 people were injured and that ‘there are warnings a suspect armed with a knife is still on the run as bomb squads are called in to deactivate a second device.’

UPDATE 8: Flames engulfed one carriage and raced along a train on a west London route to Parsons Green, forcing passengers to trample others as they rushed for an exit, an eyewitness told Reuters.

The man said people were trampled on when they fled the train after hearing a whoosh and seeing flames race towards them. He said he did not hear a bang after police rushed to an incident at the station at Parsons Green.

“I just heard a kind of whoosh. I looked up and saw the whole carriage engulfed in flames making its way towards me,” he told Reuters, adding that the train was packed with people.

UPDATE 7: Officers from the Metropolitan Police Service and British Transport Police are in attendance along with the London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service.

“We would advise people to avoid the area,” Metropolitan Police says in a Twitter message.

UPDATE 6: A Twitter user called Rigs tweeted: ‘Explosion on Parsons Green district line train. Fireball flew down carriage and we just jumped out open door.’

UPDATE 5: London’s ambulance service said on Friday it had sent its hazardous area response team to an incident at a west London metro station after reports of a blast.

“We have sent multiple resources to the scene including single responders in cars, ambulance crews, incident response officers and our hazardous area response team,” the London Ambulance Service said on Twitter.

“Our initial priority is to assess the level and nature of injuries.”

UPDATE 2: A woman at London’s Parsons Green underground train station told Reuters on Friday she was injured in a stampede.

UPDATE 1: British armed Police are on scene at London’s Parsons Green Underground Station, a Reuters photographer reportrs.

Police said they were aware of an incident at Parsons Green station in West London and that officers are in attendance. London Ambulance said paramedics were present.

Images posted on Twitter showed a women being attended to by emergency services sitting on a pavement.

Police said they were aware of reports on social media and would release facts regarding the incident once they could be sure of their accuracy.

Transport for London said on Twitter that there was no service between Earls Court and Wimbledon on the District Line which runs through Parsons Green.
