A Saudi-led airstrike against Houthi rebels took place on Wednesday near the capital of Yemen, Sanaa, killing 60 and injuring dozens more, according to local TV station Al Maseera.

The operation allegedly targeted a hotel from the northern outskirts of Sanaa. Until now, 35 bodies have been recovered from the hotel.

Eyewitnesses report that the building was completely destroyed, leaving two bodies hanging from the upper floor.

Hakim Al-Masmari from the Yemen Post told Al Jazeera that airstrikes hit several areas of the city. “It is probably the biggest massacre Yemen has witnessed by the Saudi-led coalition,”  he said.

He added: “The airstrike […] was part of at least 25 airstrikes that targeted Sanaa and the outskirts of the city since midnight. The air strikes attacked every part of Sanaa. It was a deadly night.”

It is not clear why the Saudi Air Force targeted the hotel. A representative from the Saudi-led coalition refused to comment the information.

“The coalition has to finish the After Action Review. Throughout our process we will put all the information together,” declared Colonel Turki al-Maliki, spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition, for Reuters.

The Houthis are fighting Yemen’s internationally-recognized government, which is backed by a Saudi-led military alliance, in a war with over 10,000 casualties. The situation in Yemen has been labeled as a serious humanitarian disaster.

The rebels are currently controlling the city of Sanaa and Northern Yemen.

The conflict that broke out in October 2015 has left approximatively 70% of the country’s population reliant on some form of humanitarian aid.

Official data shows that almost 15 million Yemenis lack proper access to clean water, 8 million live on the brink of famine and more than half a million people are affected by the worst outbreak of cholera in modern history.
