Dubai, the first city to now have its own Microsoft-designed font – VIDEO

Dubai has become the world’s first city to get its own font designed by Microsoft, available both in Latin and Arabic script, BBC News reports.

The Dubai font will be available in 23 languages, with government bodies already told to start using it in official correspondence.

Crown Prince Hamdan bin Mohammed al-Maktoum has been personally involved in “all the stages” of the development of the font, that he considers to be “a very important step for us as part of our continuous efforts to be ranked first in the digital world.” He added that “We are confident that this new font and its unique specifications will prove popular among other fonts used online and in smart technologies across the world”.

The launch of the font was accompanied by the hashtag “#ExpressYou” and the idea that “self-expression is an art form,” which has drawn criticism considering the fact that, according to the Human Rights Watch (HRW), the United Arab Emirates “has seen a wave of arrests and violations of human rights and freedoms and mute the voices of dissent”.
