Adult VR set to increase in sales thanks to Oculus Rift permanent price drop

Following a price cut to the Oculus Rift virtual reality gaming headset, demand for the hardware increased. This, in turn, led to a surge in VR software sales, especially when it came to Adult VR. Hence, we’re seeing a very strong correlation between VR purchases and X-rated content that could see both industries relying on each other’s success.

As part of their limited-timed Summer Sale, the Oculus Rift headset was bundled with the complimentary Oculus Touch controls for the greatly reduced price of $399. Originally $600, said bundle also came with seven virtual reality games: Lucky’s Tale, Medium, Quill, Toybox, Dead and Buried, Dragon Front, and Robo Recall.

Because of the contents of their bundle, Oculus surpassed the competition in offering consumers more for their buck. The PlayStation VR headset, previously the most economical headset, can be found for the same price minus the VR controls and software titles. Also worth noting, Oculus Rift’s price drop made VR accessible for half the price of the HTC Vive which is available for $800.00. Thus, Oculus made their VR system the most affordable in the market.

Not long after the Summer Sale began, reports from VR developers started flowing in about increases in video games sales. These were not only sales recorded from the Oculus store but sales related to Adult VR content such as the hentai title VR Girlfriend. The creator, yunayuna64, posted a twitter update stating that VR Girlfriend witnessed a 200% sales increase within a few days of the Oculus Rift’s Summer Sale announcement. Considering the small time frame, you can say the new VR owners were especially eager to use Oculus Rift for Adult content.

An additional sales increase was reported for Hentai title Waifu Sex Simulator. Over sixty percent to be exact. Not only that but the game’s Patreon page saw an increase in donations to help back an official release, reaching over $2,350 in monthly revenue. There is little nuance to the game besides the act described in the name. And for anyone who doesn’t know what a Waifu is, the Urban Dictionary defines it as follows:

“A term coined by Otaku and Weeaboo alike for their 2D significant others; predominantly anime and video game characters. A Waifu, in contrast to a harem, is the love between one man and his one and only Waifu. You treat your Waifu with the utmost respect and courtesy and most refuse to even fap to their beloved, seeing the act as an insult to the non-existent woman they have committed themselves to.”

With the increase in VR sales and the simultaneous increase in VR content purchased, we learn from adult gaming site XBiz that an estimated 38% of VR headsets are purchased with the intent to buy Adult content. However we look at it, Virtual Reality has proven the most immersive experience when it comes to romantic re-enactment, viewing X-rated content, and sex simulation. “Furthermore, investment firm Piper Jaffray estimates that it will hit $1 billion in revenue by 2025,” reports GameRevolution.

Finally, after witnessing the quick success of their Summer Sale, Oculus and Facebook decided to permanently lower the price of their Oculus Rift bundle to $500. Profits proved that the main hindrance to VR’s popularity was the price tag. By permanently lowering the cost, they’ve permanently made the hardware easier to obtain. And if software sales are anything to go by, this will lead to the parallel success of Adult VR gaming, likely fueling the development of similar projects that grow more and more innovative. What exactly does that mean? Time will tell.
