Sony estimates highest profit in 20 years

Japanese giant Sony, the largest electronics exporter in Japan, estimates a profit of $4,5bn in the financial year that is to end in March 2018, the best result in 20 years.

In 1998, Sony announced a profit of $4,7bn, due to a strong demand in electronics combined with the popularity of the first Play Station console and the box-office success of the movie ”Men in Black”.

Sony is now close once again to that ”golden era”, after massive restructuring made by CEO Kazuo Hirai. He sold the Vaio computer division and downsized TV operations.

Sony now relies on the semiconductor division, which manufactures especially image sensors, used in most smartphones sold worldwide.

Sony estimates that the chip division will register a profit of around $1,07bn, while the profit of the video game division is estimated to increase by 25,4%.

At the same time, Sony expects its movie studios and television channels to make a profit once again, after the $1bn financial gap announced a few months ago, following a diminished value of the assets.
