Can Apple truly amaze us again?

It’s been a long time since Apple has come out with a truly revolutionary product. Will the iPhone 8 change this trend?

As one of the largest technology companies in the world, Apple continually stakes its reputation on releasing products that capture the imagination of its users. From phones to tablets to computers and more, Apple strives to create products that are both beautiful and functional, in its own unique way. But this business model has come under intense scrutiny over the last few years, as many of the products Apple has released have been judged to be unimpressive and not as unique or revolutionary as Apple’s user base is accustomed to.

The last few iPhones have provided only minor changes and modifications, with better cameras and internal upgrades being the main focus. This simply isn’t good enough for many users who have held Apple to such a lofty standard. Making a phone waterproof or coming out with a new color palette is not enough. Where is the wireless charging? O virtual reality? Instead of more groundbreaking changes, Apple decides to take away the headphone jack and give you another way to turn on lights or open your garage door. This is where things are at with Apple in terms of releasing products.

Things are even worse when it comes to Apple’s Mac division; the newest Macbook Pro was widely panned by critics and users alike. Apple continues to alienate professionals by eliminating important elements from their laptops. Getting rid of inputs (audio-in, USB 3.0, etc.) forces users to purchase expensive USB-C hubs and other equipment just to edit video and other media. It seems as if Apple is focusing too much on keeping their laptops sleek and thin, rather than on power and performance. The Mac Pro line has not been updated significantly in years, and iMacs have only seen incremental changes. The focus is clearly on phones and tablets, but at what cost to Mac users?

There is plenty of optimism over the iPhone 8, which should be released in September. An OLED display, wireless charging, and other elements are rumored to make this the most impressive iPhone release in years (coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the iPhone). And the company has also promised more dramatic refreshes to the iMac and Mac Pro models, a welcome sign for professional users. No one can question the success of Apple, but the next few product launches will go a long way in determining if Apple can get back to consistently amazing us. It has been awhile since this has been the case.
