Law passed in Sweden for the country to become carbon neutral by 2045

The Swedish Parliament has just passed a law that aims at making the country carbon neutral by 2045, with Sweden becoming the first country to upgrade its carbon goals since the 2015 Paris Climate Accord, Inhabitat.com reports.

The law, prepared by a cross-party committee, was approved with an overwhelming majority and means that Sweden now set its goal to become carbon neutral from 2050 to 2045, while the law also calls for an action plan that will need to be updated every four years.

The Swedish are going to focus on transportation in order to meet this goal, with measures such as increased use of vehicles powered by electricity or biofuels.

With Sweden obtaining 83% of its energy from hydroelectric power plants and nuclear power plants, it met the goal of obtaining 50% of its energy from renewable sources eight years ahead of their target. They will also continue to plant trees and invest in renewable projects in other countries as well.

“With the Trump decision to get out of the Paris Agreement, Europe is more united than ever and wants to show leadership to the world,” said Femke de Jong, European Union Policy Director at Carbon Market Watch about the fact that other European countries might follow in the footsteps of Sweden.

Nevertheless, the country has recently been accused of attempting to weaken rules so as to obscure the emissions from burning wood and deforestation, alongside other countries such as France, Austria and Finland.
