Eurostat: how much electricity was produced last year in EU’s wind farms

Denmark is the EU country with the highest percentage of wind-generated electricity, according to a recent report published by the European Statistics Office – Eurostat.

Approximately 315,000 gigawatt-hour of electricity were generated last year within the European Union with the help of wind turbines. This is the equivalent of over 10% of the total of 3,1 million gigawatt-hour produced in the EU.

According to Eurostat, wind has become the fourth electricity source in the EU, after thermal power stations (49%), nuclear power plants (26%) and hydroelectric power plants (12%).

Within the EU countries, the highest rate wind-generated electricity out of the total electricity production was found in Denmark – 43%.

Denmark was followed in 2016 by Lithuania (27%), Ireland (21%), Portugal (20%), Spain (18%) and Great Britain (14%).

The bottom of the ranking included Malta, Slovenia, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, each with percentages of under 1%.

Latvia and Hungary each registered percentages of 2%, while France, Luxembourg and Finland each had percentages of around 4%.
