Lyft partners with Jaguar Land Rover to work towards driverless ride-sharing
Jaguar Land Rover has announced a $25 million investment in Lyft, making it the latest car manufacturer to pair with a ride-hailing app.
The historic automotive brand will provide Lyft drivers with a fleet of luxury vehicles, meaning that Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles will soon be employed to provide rides to those using the app.
The new partners will also work together on the continued development of autonomous vehicles. The collaboration comes from JLR’s InMotion Ventures, a new division set up last year to look at new transport technology.
The investment gives a new advantage to Lyft in a race with main competitor Uber, towards an entirely driverless ride-hailing experience. The news also comes in a controversial week for Uber, with its CEO Travis Kalanick currently under consideration for a leave of absence after a string of controversies.
The pairing is one of a recent string of new partners, including Waymo (formerly Google’s self-driving car project), and autonomous vehicle startup NuTonomy.
Jaguar Land Rover has previously announced that it would be ready to test 100 self-driving cars in the UK by 2020. The autonomous vehicle market, according to the UK government, is worth £900bn worldwide.
