Gene editing set to advance

The advances in gene editing are now being seen more frequently throughout the biomedical sphere. Last week reports came out that gene editing in mice had cured them of HIV. Now techniques are forging the way to trial new CRISPR research on humans.

CRISPR which is the acronym for Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats is the segment of DNA responsible for fighting bacterial infection. This is why scientists are interested in editing this segment of DNA to fight cancers and cure HIV.

As trials are set to edit cells, to create immune responses, or remove parts of the DNA that facilitate infections such as HIV, then return the altered cells to the body, advances in cures are likely to increase over the coming years.

Previous trials often required the genome editing to occur externally from the body, but The New Scientist Magazine has disclosed that 20 trials, to eliminate cancer causing HPV virus, will be conducted within the body.

Such rapid advances are likely to see notable changes in the affordability and efficiency of gene editing practices. Therefore cures for illnesses such as cystic fibrosis, HIV, HPV and many cancers are likely to transpire over the coming years.
