Artificial Intelligence – the potential for harm

1830 views

As the processing power of computers increases exponentially, the potential for an Artificial Intelligence surge is now being seen, as Google are adding AI startups to their ever increasing portfolio. The abilities of machine intelligence are set to influence the nature of life as we know it.

Artificial Intelligence is the processing of information that results in better outcomes, by trial and error, or by implementing specifically designed software packages. As processors can now number crunch on an unimaginable scale, providing solutions to once impossible problems has now become conceivable. Consequently, the uses for AI in the field of health, the environment (global warming), production, conflict, and communication are inordinate. This coupled with wearable nanotechnology will see a futuristic version of daily life pan out in the 21st Century.

However, there are deep concerns about the potential threats posed by Artificial Intelligence. The Future of Life Institute have reported on the importance for research into the negative consequences that AI may have on our planet. As we look towards AI to solve our problems, it is possible that solutions to these problems could have destructive consequences, that AI programmes may not envisage.

Moreover, as we utilise AI to solve humanities’ problems, will that inevitably lead to destructive outcomes for the rest of the planet. Some have argued humanities’ strive to control their environment could result in negative responses for AI software. Consequently, the importance of AI to accommodate humanities downfalls whilst meeting a holistic benefit is imperative.
