Our personal characteristics, that make up who we are, will possibly be stored on an international database. A report from Biometrics Update.com has highlighted that The UN intend to share the data of individuals in an attempt to prevent human trafficking, illegal immigration and other forms of criminality.

As the information age evolves more information is held about individuals online. Our DNA, fingerprints, facial features and retina information may soon appear on an international database to prevent illegal immigration, human trafficking and other forms of criminality. A recent report by Biometrics Update.com – UN migration agency introducing biometric data exchange – has been published today. (Biometrics Update.com, July, 2018)

The report advises that the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the UN’s migration agency, is working on introducing a biometric data exchange that could see the sharing of our biometric data between countries, who sign up to the service. Although it has not yet been made clear which countries will enter into this information sharing scheme, the article reports that so far 7 countries have discussed entering into the agreement, but their identities have not been disclosed (Biometrics Update.com, July, 2017)

Earlier this month Donato Colucci discussed the implementation of this information sharing service, advising that no information will be held on the database, but it will provide a facility to share information. He discussed the Regional Data Exchange Solution (RBDES) at Interpol World 2017. (Biometrics Update, July, 2017).

With the onset of social media, hi-tech surveillance systems within our airports and public areas such information can be easily gathered about individuals. This may lead to further information being gained about our biometric make-up, including our DNA, fingerprints, blood type, and distinguishing features. The ethics of such a system seem to be founded in the general protection of citizens from organised crime.
