Looking to buy a Nintendo Switch? You might be out of luck for 2017

Nintendo’s newest console, the Nintendo Switch, was available for purchase globally on March 3rd 2017. That was a little over four months ago. The hype around the console was huge leading up to its release and subsequent months after people were buying them just as fast as Nintendo was able to manufacture them. Currently, there is a shortage.

Nintendo’s projections for the availability of Switches worldwide are not too promising for the remainder of 2017. There are Switches out there for purchase, but if you are hoping to pay Nintendo’s retail price of $299.99, you’re out of luck. Doing some quick research online will reveal some upsetting results. Across the nation, Best Buy is sold out, as well as Gamestop. Here and there these stores are getting shipments, but they are getting snagged up before the employee finishes stocking the shelves. Looking on Amazon and eBay, the console is going for about $100 or more than it’s retail price. With the immensely high demand for the Switch, this might be your only option if you want one any time soon.

With critically acclaimed games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe already out, and anticipated games set to release this year like Mario Odyssey and Splatoon 2, and Metroid Prime 4 and a Pokemon RPG announced, Nintendo has its work cut out for them to try and pick up the pace of production. The extremely popular games the company is planning to release for the Switch is only adding to the demand of the console.

The company’s biggest issue is that the Switch actually uses a lot of the same hardware parts as Apple’s iPhones. Nintendo’s goal for 2017 is to produce about 20 million consoles worldwide, but that goal doesn’t look too attainable. With Apple outbidding Nintendo on the hardware, it looks like the shortage is going to continue through the year.

Point is, if you happen across a Nintendo Switch in stores, don’t hesitate. Buy it and thank me later because you might not get another chance before the year is out.
