The first ever real Mecha fight is happening next month.

In the summer of 2015, an American robotics company named MegaBots Inc. challenged a Japanese robotics company (Suidobashi Heavy Industries) to take part in the first ever giant robot fight. They accepted.

Now, thanks to a half-a-million dollar Kickstarter and the determination of two talented robotics companies, in a month’s time the world will have the chance to watch the first ever mecha fight in history.

In the initial video of MegaBots Inc. challenging SHI, the company flaunted their bot’s high-powered paintball guns that are able to launch 3lb projectiles at over 130mph. In reply, Suidobashi Heavy Industries CEO Kogoro Kurata claimed that “Just building something huge and sticking guns on it” is “super american”. SHI’s robot KURATAS can equip itself with 6,000 round per minute BB gatling gun.

The two teams will be representing their respective countries – both of which have had rich and influential histories in the tech world – in the much-delayed and anticipated fight. In the American corner is the Mk.III MegaBot at a hulking 12,000lbs with its paintball guns and a recently announced chainsaw. In the Japanese corner is KURATAS, a four-wheeled mech sitting slightly lighter at 9,000lbs, but with a launcher that can shoot fireworks.

So although a couple explosions short of Gundam Wing levels of mayhem, the 15-foot-tall showdown is sure to lead to some metallic fireworks. MegaBots Inc. are claiming that the mecha battle is our first glimpse into the future of sports. Here’s hoping they’re right, and oilsport becomes the new bloodsport.

The fight is slated to take place in August,w ith a venue announcement expected in a couple weeks.
