These buildings were never finished. Find out here why.

Buildings can become representative landmarks for a particular place, with their architecture expressing a certain concept. Nevertheless, there are some buildings that can do all these things even in their unfinished condition.

Here are four unfinished buildings that managed to stand out.

Sagrada Familia

Construction of Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia started in 1882, with Gaudi being the head architect since 1883.  He combined several architectural styles, such as Gothic and Art Nouveau to transform the original design of the building. At his death in 1926, the building was less than 25% complete.

The building progressed at such a slow pace due to the 1936 Spanish Civil War and reliance on private donations. The completion is anticipated in 2026.

Prora

Intended as a beach resort on the island of Rugen, Germany, Prora was planned by the Nazis and built between 1936 and 1939. The complex included eight identical buildings with 10,000 rooms intended to overlook the sea. Its construction was brought to a halt due to the onset of World War II.

At the moment, four buildings are being renovated, while a fifth one is being used as a youth hostel.

Boldt Castle

This castle located in upstate New York, on Heart Island, was a private mansion built by George Boldt for his family. The six-storey castle was intended as a gift for his wife, and the campaign for its construction was launched in 1900. However, Boldt’s wife died in 1904 and the construction of the castle was halted indefinitely. Boldt never returned to the island, so the first floor rooms are finished while the second floor to the top floor rooms remains unfinished.

The castle now opens to the public seasonally between May and October.

This unfinished 105-storey building is the tallest structure in North Korea. It was intended to be completed in 1989, after 2 years of construction, yet the work was halted in 1992 as a result of the economic crisis which followed the fall of the Soviet Union. There were a few attempts to resume the work on the building, yet it still remains unopened, for unclear reasons.
