Opinion: Die Mannschaft’s Blitzkrieg of El Tri
In stunning fashion, Germany wrecked the CONCACAF giants.
Mexico continues to choke
For a third year in a row, Mexico dropped out of a tournament in humiliating fashion. This has become a tradition for El Tri. Last year, in the Copa America, they bowed out of the tournament with 0-7 loss to Chile. In the 2015 Copa America, they were eliminated in the group stage. Playing under pressure is not the team’s forte.
Germany’s youth is unpredictable
Based on Die Mannshaft’s earlier matches, their success was in question. They struggled against Cameroon and Australia. Then, out of nowhere, they nailed three unanswered goals plus another in relation to Mexico’s consolation goal. We now wonder how they will do in a rematch against Chile.
All of their players are less than 30 years old. Julian Draxler (23) is the only player with big match experience (having played in the 2014 World Cup). Sandro Wagner is the oldest player at 29 years of age. They have transitioned between kittens and goal scoring machines.
Defeat Portugal for partial glory
At the very least, Mexico can say that they are competing for third place. El Tri won’t be bring championship gold back to Estadio Azteca, but bringing bronze is better than coming back empty handed. Mexico and Portugal showed us that they’re pretty even, so it’s hard to call.
